to whom or what do you bow?

We start with the physicality of a bow. Bending the body forward, lowering head below heart, moving towards the earth. We allow ourselves to be moved by the littlest thing. We notice resistance. We feel into our relationship with one another. We become more porous to the web of relations we are surrounded and held by.

Closed Loop of Consanguinity is a performance project by emily liptow & Carol Laursen. We draw from our practices in physical theater and contact improvisation to explore the physicality of the bow in its multitude of expressions and play with the edges of intimacy with various manifestations of the divine. Improvisational in structure and rooted in movement research, the work considers a few questions: To whom or what do we bow? What do we look up to? Or down upon? How does this manifest in our bodies and relationships with one another? We move through these questions by embodying expressions of power, surrender, devotion, dominance, and right relationship.

Our next iteration of theClosed Loop of Consanguinity will be presented at Borderlight Theater Festival in Cleveland Ohio July 9-11th 2026. We welcome you as witness to this unfolding of process. Each person’s presence offers something to our field of relations.
